600 years of eventful history – Even today you can still feel it, the atmosphere of days long past: When you enter the time-honored Kaprun Castle, it is as if you are traveling back in time. The newly designed museum shows the special features of Kaprun’s approximately 4,000 year history: the beginnings of settlement, archaeological finds, early tourism around 1900, modern tourism, the social environment during the construction of the power plant and the 2nd World War.


The museum is housed in the 400-year-old Steinerhaus on Kirchbichl. The old farm building alone is worth a visit. On 140sqm you will experience the special charisma of the museum and the building.

SIGMUND-THUN GORGE AND GORGE LAKE

Visit the natural monument named after Count Sigmund of Thun. Listen to his wise words here: “Thunderous and mighty the floods flow towards us”. The gorge has been shaped by the melted glacier for about 14,000 years. The Kapruner Ache has cut up to 32m deep on its 320m long path and formed striking rock formations. Experience the enormous forces of water along the gorge walkway.
